About FairiesFairy (Singular) Fairies (Plural) and Fae (Referring to the species) are modern variations of the old words fai and fay which were introduced to the English language near the early 1400's deriving from the Old French words faie or fee and even earlier from the Vulgar Laten fata. Fata, meaning one of the spinning Fates of either Greek, Roman or Norse mythology. These Fates were thought to oversee the length and eventualities of mortal lives.
Over time mythology changed from referring to a spiritual guide such as a Guardian Angel into a more nature or element specific spirit of protection. Many depictions of Fairies exist ranging in height from less than an inch tall to the height of a small child. The fairies' origin, if known at all, changed by culture. The Banshee (Gaelic for Fairy Woman) was usually told as a ghost or sign of death. The Fae have been seen as mischievous pranksters, fallen angels, devils, elementals, ghosts and all between. They have been named brownie, changelings, drawf, elf, goblin, kobold, leprechaun, and pixie.
